Biodegradable packaging: what does that actually mean?<\/h2>\n

Let's start with the basics. A biodegradable packaging<\/b> is packaging that can be broken down by micro-organisms into natural components such as water, CO\u2082 and biomass - without leaving any harmful residues. That means: no microplastics, no pollution, and no centuries of degradation time.<\/p>\n

Important to know: biodegradable is not the same as compostable. All compostable packaging is biodegradable, but not all biodegradable packaging can simply be disposed of with the VGF waste. Timing, temperature and moisture play a role here. More on this later \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

How does biodegradable packaging work in practice?<\/h2>\n

A biodegradable packaging<\/b> works because the material is composed in such a way that bacteria, fungi and other micro-organisms can easily digest it. Think of materials such as PLA (made from maize starch), sugar cane fibres, agricultural waste or starch plastics.<\/p>\n

Decomposition starts as soon as the material enters the right environment. For some packaging, that's an industrial composting facility; for others, an ordinary backyard compost heap is enough. The right combination of moisture, oxygen and temperature is essential for that magical digestion process.<\/p>\n
