Flexible packaging can be very sustainable, especially if designed according to the new European Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) guidelines. They use less material than rigid packaging, can be well recycled and increasingly contain recycled plastic.
Important to know: not every product, such as food or cosmetics, may consist entirely of recycled material. PurePack knows exactly what can be done now and what is smart towards 2030.

From 2030, all packaging in Europe must be recyclable. The main requirements are:
- Mono-material for packaging and zippers: LDPE or PP, no mix with paper or PET
- Maximum 5% additives
- Detectable colours (not fully black or dark printed)
- Mandatory material code and grading symbol from 2028 onwards
- Packaging should not be smaller than 50×50 mm

How do I recognise a recyclable pouch?
You can recognise a recyclable pouch by:
- Mono-material (LDPE = SPI 4, PP = SPI 5): this means the pouch is recyclable
- The recycle symbol (Mobius)
- From 2028: QR code with recycling information

What is the difference between PE and PP mono-material?
PE (LDPE): flexible, does not tear easily, easy to seal, more recyclable than PP
PP: sturdier, more resistant to heat, ideal for pasteurisation

Yes, PurePack's food-safe flexible packaging is perfect for coffee, tea or nuts. For coffee beans, we can add a valve or reusable zipper. Please note that the KIDV.nl does not allow a valve in recyclable bags. However, zippers do.

What closures does PurePack have available for flexible packaging?
PurePack offers two types of zippers:
- Standard zipper: inexpensive and firmly sealable, suitable for many products and most frequently chosen.
- Velcro zipper: user-friendly and ideal for powders or products that are opened frequently, due to flawless sealing, more expensive than the standard zipper.

What will change as a result of the PPWR legislation?
The Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) legislation unifies packaging rules across Europe. Here are the main changes:
- All packaging should be recyclable or reusable.
- From 2030, every product must be made partly of recycled plastic (10-35%).
- Mandatory material code and sort symbol
- QR code showing composition, recyclability and collection instructions is likely to become mandatory.
